Crawford Doubling Cube – A Katgammon Innovation
Katgammon wanted to honor Mr. Johan R. Crawford, who invented the Crawford rule in the 20th century, by creating this cube — the first of its kind in backgammon history.
In tournament play, the Crawford rule requires that after one player reaches match point, the next game is played without the doubling cube. Traditionally, a marker is placed on the scoreboard to indicate Crawford mode, but it can sometimes be forgotten.
Katgammon’s creative solution: on the rarely used 32 side of the cube, we engraved the word “Crawford.”
Simply place the cube on Crawford’s face to indicate that the game is in Crawford mode. This makes it instantly clear that the cube is temporarily out of play, preventing accidental doubles and ensuring smooth, tournament-friendly gameplay.

Such a clever idea! Using the 32 side for the Crawford rule is brilliant. No more forgetting to remove the cube during the Crawford game. Practical and beautifully made — only Katgammon would think of this!
