The British Backgammon Awards 2020 – get your nominations in!

Nominations are now open for the British Backgammon Awards 2020

Sadly if there was an award for it, COVID-19 would certainly win the Had Biggest Impact On Backgammon. However, we want to look on the positives of the last 12 months and tell us who in the backgammon world has made a real difference to the game. The 2020 Awards cover the period since the start of August 2019 – so it includes the World Championships, the Clubs Championship, and of course the UK Open! We’ll collate the nominations and voting will happen later in the summer, with the deserving winners being announced in the autumn. Backgammon wouldn’t be what it is without the tournament directors, the club and league organisers, the unseen helpers, and the players – some of whom may never even have won a trophy but whose presence makes an evening session a highly enjoyable experience – and we particularly want to acknowledge those who have kept things running despite all the obstacles of lockdown.

This year, we’ve revised the categories to reflect the upheaval, with tournaments cancelled, few chances to play rated matches, and a big move to playing online. We have new ones to reflect this, and some familiar ones are being rested with the hope that normality comes back in 2021. Nominations are being accepted in the following categories:

  • British Player of the Year – Face to Face
  • British Player of the Year – Online
  • International Player of the Year
  • Online Tournament Director of the Year
  • Club Organiser of the Year
  • Most Significant Contributor to British Backgammon of the Year
  • Online Backgammon Site of the Year
  • Most Courteous Player of the Year

To nominate your favourites, simply mail [email protected] with a list of your nominees and what categories you are nominating them in. While nominating and voting is open to UKBGF members, the person who you’re nominating need not be. Joint nominations are allowed, for example where there are groups of two or three who organise significant events. Please include a brief reason why you’re nominating them and what makes them stand out – it need only be a few words to encourage others to support your nominee! You can even nominate more than one person in each category, although you’ll only be able to vote for one in each category when the time comes. Nominations close at midnight on 16th August 2020. We will announce the shortlists as soon as possible thereafter, and voting will take place between then and the AGM in September. Remember, you must be a UKBGF member to vote.

If you feel there’s someone exceptional who doesn’t fit into any of the above categories, please do also let us know – there is always scope to include an extra award for someone really special.
